VSAN 6 RVC (Ruby vSphere Console) Examples

 Taking a Test Drive; it's been too long:

1. Putty into the vcenter appliance and log in as root

login as: root

fix_renamed_vms: This command can be used to rename some VMs which get renamed by the VC in case of storage inaccessibility. It is possible for some VMs to get renamed to vmx file path. eg. "/vmfs/volumes/vsanDatastore/foo/foo.vmx". This command will rename this VM to "foo". This is the best we can do. This VM may have been named something else but we have no way to know. In this best effort command, we simply rename it to the name of its config file (without the full path and .vmx extension ofcourse!).
vm_object_info: Fetch VSAN object information about a VM
disks_stats: Show stats on all disks in VSAN
whatif_host_failures: Simulates how host failures impact VSAN resource usage
observer: Run observer
observer_process_statsfile: Analyze an offline observer stats file and produce static HTML

Flash Read Cache in vSphere 6

How to Configure and Monitor Flash Read Cache in vSphere 6

1. Using the Web Client, click on Manage and Settings to find the Flash Read Cache Option.


2. Click on Add Capacity to specify which SSD device will be used for this.


3. Notice that you have the option to use part of this device for a Host Swap Cache as well.


5. Notice that 4GBs have been used out of the total capacity of the drive for Host Swap Cache.


6. Notice that the previous step leaves about 10GBs available for Flash Read Cache.


7. Allocate a portion of this drive to a critical virtual machine.


8. Notice that this leaves about 6GBs available for other virtual machines.


9. Using putty (ssh), run some commands related for flash read cache.

Network Traffic Rule Example

How to add network traffic rules to a distributed switch

Network traffic rules are a distributed virtual switch feature available since vSphere 5.5. It allows the administrator to create rules to allow, drop or tag certain types of traffic. What follows is a simple example where the administrator decides to prevent ICM traffic from one vm to another one using IP qualifiers.

1. After creating a distribued virtual switch, edit the settings of the port group.

 

2. Select  Traffic Filtering and Marking and Enable this feature.


3.  Click on the "+" sign to add a new rule.


4.  Name the rule, select the traffic direction and specify the qualifiers.


5. Verify the settings of the rule created.


vCenter Appliance Upgrade

How to Upgrade the vCenter Applicance from 5.5 to 6.0

1. After downloading the appliance from vmware.com/downloads, start by installing the client integration plugin. This step is needed for new installs or upgrades. Firefox was used for this procedure.






2. Once the client plugin is installed, begin the upgrade. Make sure that your appliance has a static ip and that DNS records are in place. Notice the captures carefully.
