Although typically monitored via the vSphere Client, there are plenty of commands available to understand objects and their health. What follows are a few of these commands.</p><p>1. esxcli vsan debug object list. This command displays all of the objects and components. It also displays information about the policies used, the state of the components, their location and vote count.<br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S8JnWcijU68/YaZOVbjQHvI/AAAAAAAAFUM/cfWFLxDqDXc8Gt2FERbOzFqTbxPgGfQ3wCLcBGAsYHQ/s1179/4.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="536" data-original-width="1179" height="246" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-S8JnWcijU68/YaZOVbjQHvI/AAAAAAAAFUM/cfWFLxDqDXc8Gt2FERbOzFqTbxPgGfQ3wCLcBGAsYHQ/w543-h246/4.JPG" width="543" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><p>2. esxcli vsan debug object health summary get. According to Cormac Hogan, one cluster can mount up to 5 remote vSAN datastores. Be aware that HCI Mesh requires Enterprise or Enterprise + licenses. </p><p>Useful YouTube video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dcdwy1wh-DM&feature=emb_title</p>esx-guyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12855172211703779886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6165386798365897110.post-55193012670384662242020-09-24T06:25:00.004-07:002020-09-25T05:01:08.228-07:00How to Create a Basic Docker Container<p style="text-align: center;"><b> How to create a basic Docker container</b></p><p style="text-align: center;"><br /></p><p><b>Step 1: install docker in your pc, laptop or vm.</b></p><p># sudo apt-get install docker.io</p><p># sudo systemctl start docker</p><p># sudo systemctl enable docker</p><p><b>Step 2: create a directory for testing purposes and access such folder</b></p><p># mkdir Dockerfiles</p><p># cd Dockerfiles</p><p><b>Step 3: Create a docker file and call it Dockerfile</b></p><p># vi Dockerfile</p><p># Specify the base image to use, gets downloaded automatically</p><p>FROM ubuntu</p><p># Specify the maintainer and email address</p><p>MAINTAINER *** <***@gmail.com</p><p>RUN apt-get update</p><p># Specify the command to run</p><p>CMD [#echo", "Hello guys...! from my first image"]</p><p><b>Step 4: Build your image and tag it</b></p><p># sudo docker build -t myimage:1.0 .</p><p><span> </span>Sending build context to Docker daemon 2.048kB</p><p><span> </span>Step 1/4 : FROM ubuntu</p><p> <span> </span>---> bb0eaf4eee00</p><p><span> </span>Step 2/4 : MAINTAINER *** <***@gmail.com></p><p> <span> </span>---> Using cache</p><p> <span> </span>---> 2c30cf6f43fb</p><p><span> </span>Step 3/4 : RUN apt-get update</p><p> <span> </span>---> Using cache</p><p> <span> </span>---> 832660e5cdc3</p><p><span> </span>Step 4/4 : CMD ["echo", "Hello guys...! from my first image"]</p><p> <span> </span>---> Using cache</p><p> <span> </span>---> 168e1047d6a4</p><p><span> </span>Successfully built 168e1047d6a4</p><p><span> </span>Successfully tagged myimage:1.0</p><p><b>Step 5: List the images available</b></p><p>$ sudo docker image list</p><p>REPOSITORY TAG IMAGE ID CREATED SIZE</p><p>myimage 1.0 b6f0f1350590 2 minutes ago 95.8MB</p><p>ubuntu latest bb0eaf4eee00 8 days ago 72.9MB</p><p><b>Step 6</b><b>: Run the image for testing purposes</b></p><p># sudo docker run image_id</p><p><span> </span>Hello guys...! from my first image</p><p><b>Final Note:</b> </p><p>You can pull more images to play with using sudo docker pull image_name</p>esx-guyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12855172211703779886noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6165386798365897110.post-69149782287247137872020-09-24T04:38:00.000-07:002020-09-24T04:38:03.794-07:00How to Deploy a Kubernetes Pod in vSphere<p> <b>What is a Kubernetes Pod?</b></p><p>A Pod is a Kubernetes structure that is used as a wrapper for one or multiple containers. This is achieved via appliances running Photon and containers. This feature uses three appliances (will run with a minimum of two) and a maximum of 8. Each appliance uses 4vcpus and 4 or 8 GBs of RAM depending of the version. While setting this up, be aware of the Check Upgrade feature that allows the appliances to be upgraded (rolling upgrade) if new versions are available. According to Cormac Hogan a couple of days ago, 7.1 supports the SMB protocol as well as Kerberos + A.D.<br /><div><b><br /></b></div><div><b>Initial Steps<br /></b><div><br /></div><div>1. <b>vSAN 7.0 File Shares</b><br />
<b><br /></b>
One of the new features of vSAN 7.0 is the ability to create NFS shares inside of the vSAN datastore. This is done using agents, which are deployed via ovf. Below are the steps.<br />
<br />
Step 1: Select your vSAN cluster and go to Configure. Enable File Service.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j_PlVoH8c_Q/XnOjDhpPhiI/AAAAAAAAEkU/uroE0NHd8bQbA1FDSsXWkDxW-ceMk0uaQCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/nfs1.PNG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="156" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-j_PlVoH8c_Q/XnOjDhpPhiI/AAAAAAAAEkU/uroE0NHd8bQbA1FDSsXWkDxW-ceMk0uaQCK4BGAYYCw/s320/nfs1.PNG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
Step 2: Go through the wizard to configure your NFS file shares.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-48kBLPt4u0k/XnOjOfMC5qI/AAAAAAAAEkk/wi_bxKNzYwoJSNmCEdWb_5EU-j4xl-sxgCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/nfs2.PNG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="126" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-48kBLPt4u0k/XnOjOfMC5qI/AAAAAAAAEkk/wi_bxKNzYwoJSNmCEdWb_5EU-j4xl-sxgCK4BGAYYCw/s320/nfs2.PNG" width="320" /></a><br />
Step 3: Download the ovf from the Internet (automatic approach)<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IhxwqBHQUe0/XnOjz65TQUI/AAAAAAAAEmQ/HbqLcn2ULR098ZBOfat5AGQW--9UC3U2gCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/nfs3.PNG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="127" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IhxwqBHQUe0/XnOjz65TQUI/AAAAAAAAEmQ/HbqLcn2ULR098ZBOfat5AGQW--9UC3U2gCK4BGAYYCw/s320/nfs3.PNG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Step 4: Specify your authentication method (auth_sys) and provide domain information.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wOCKaflt8-E/XnOj1xJbrcI/AAAAAAAAEmY/EGDm1SJfwF0kFRh9Ll73Fm9APn8R516egCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/nfs4.PNG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="128" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-wOCKaflt8-E/XnOj1xJbrcI/AAAAAAAAEmY/EGDm1SJfwF0kFRh9Ll73Fm9APn8R516egCK4BGAYYCw/s320/nfs4.PNG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Step 5: Specify the port group for your agent appliances.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xZLL52ROH0o/XnOj4JQx_9I/AAAAAAAAEmg/3Le4BYJ8UisuzQEL0VsLPE-laCW6M9svACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/nfs5.PNG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="126" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xZLL52ROH0o/XnOj4JQx_9I/AAAAAAAAEmg/3Le4BYJ8UisuzQEL0VsLPE-laCW6M9svACK4BGAYYCw/s320/nfs5.PNG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Step 6: Wait for the appliances to be configured. Be patient and monitor the recent tasks.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wKm_APNZZgg/XnOkAjmWCNI/AAAAAAAAEm0/kEmYNnSsigERuylX5lUnBNrSB0Ep2q7yACK4BGAYYCw/s1600/nfs7.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="124" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-wKm_APNZZgg/XnOkAjmWCNI/AAAAAAAAEm0/kEmYNnSsigERuylX5lUnBNrSB0Ep2q7yACK4BGAYYCw/s320/nfs7.PNG" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Step 7: Monitor the Recent Tasks and make sure they finish before proceeding.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pfkbxQmmmp4/XnOnAGrAdCI/AAAAAAAAEoI/dxEqiIhI1sU1ZwVOrZZVV_r2FXCbmPAswCK4BGAYYCw/s1600/nfs8.PNG" imageanchor="1"><img border="0" height="81" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-pfkbxQmmmp4/XnOnAGrAdCI/AAAAAAAAEoI/dxEqiIhI1sU1ZwVOrZZVV_r2FXCbmPAswCK4BGAYYCw/s320/nfs8.PNG" width="320" /></a><br />
<br />
Step 8: Click on ADD to configure your first share.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<span style="text-align: left;">Have you ever looked at the boot disk of your enviroment and wondered what exactly do those entries represent? I am talking about :1, :2 and so forth... Have you ever wondered if your boot disk has the same number of partitions, or is the number potentially different when comparing two esxi hosts?</span></div>
<span style="text-align: left;"></span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's take a look at the boot disk in this case. All your drives are listed in /dev/disks, which is a link to /vmfs/devices/disks. The way you recognize the boot disk is by looking at all the partitions of such drive. The boot disk is the only one that has so many partitions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--M1WxGUfWN0/XLnNBel0PmI/AAAAAAAAEH0/b_ug_0sY6hgfgdRHiHUt8Ga-DMgyj6qrACLcBGAs/s1600/par1.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="144" data-original-width="671" height="85" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/--M1WxGUfWN0/XLnNBel0PmI/AAAAAAAAEH0/b_ug_0sY6hgfgdRHiHUt8Ga-DMgyj6qrACLcBGAs/s400/par1.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
To understand the type of partitions that exist in the boot disk, simply use the partedUtil command. This command creates, removes and list partitions. Use the --help command to see all the options. In this case, we query the boot disk and see several partitions.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LgmPIdbXlpk/XLnNF6arfvI/AAAAAAAAEH4/xCRUG80IVAkj-2RQRPD3PoNcwnQUhyncQCLcBGAs/s1600/par2.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="150" data-original-width="537" height="110" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-LgmPIdbXlpk/XLnNF6arfvI/AAAAAAAAEH4/xCRUG80IVAkj-2RQRPD3PoNcwnQUhyncQCLcBGAs/s400/par2.PNG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
<b>Partition Breakdowns </b><br />
<br />
Let us start with partition 1. This 4mb partition contains the bootloader.<br />
<br />
Partition 2 (4gbs in size) is used as the scratch partition. The output of vm-support is located there.<br />
<br />
Partition 5 (250mb) is your bootbank. The hypervisor's image is located here.<br />
<br />
Partition 6 (250) is your alt bootbank. This is used when upgrading esxi hosts.<br />
<br />
Partition 7 is used for the Purple Screens of Death. It's 110mb in size.<br />
<br />
Partition 8 is used to store the vmware tools images.<br />
<br />
<b>Final Note:</b> Be aware that your boot disk could also have a vmfs partition. This happens for example when installing esxi on a sata disk (like in a lab). Not created on flash memory.<br />
